Conscious Consumption and Offer

Consumo e Oferta Consciente

As the South America’s largest food retail group, we have a responsibility to offer healthy and sustainable products in our brands and business, influencing our chain of value and encouraging consumers to make their choices in a conscious manner, respecting the environment, people and animal well-being. Learn about some of our initiatives:

Conscious Consumption and Offer
Redução do desperdício de alimentos

We were the pioneers in offering organic products to our customers, betting on this type of production as a path that respects and preserves the environment, in addition to providing a healthier life, with quality products.  We promote initiatives to facilitate access and encourage consumption of organic foods:

Good Choice Taeq – Developed through Exclusive Brand Taeq and implemented at Extra, conscious in trading organic fruit and vegetables out of the aesthetic standards, but proper for consumption, at prices 40% below those of traditional organic foods.

Bult organic products – The sale of organic foods without packaging, made by Pão de Açúcar, ensures prices up to 30% below prices of pre-packed organic foods already sold and allow customers to consume in a sustainable manner, taking only the quantity they really need and with a wider choice range, with the possibility of choosing products in sizes and shapes best meeting their needs.

Caras do Brasil [The Faces of Brazil]

Caras do Brasil [The Faces of Brazil]

Pão de Açúcar has a socioeconomic incentive program for sustainable small producers since 2001, called The Faces of Brazil [o Caras do Brasil]. Present in some shops, customers can find a variety of products produced by small producers who value local culture and add value to the community.

Innovation in Packaging

Innovation in Packaging

Another important theme we are paying attention is our packages.

We are analyzing how we pack our products, searching for more sustainable manners.

Check out some of the projects:

Duofresh Packages for manipulated cold cuts – Implemented in Pão de Açúcar stores, they replace the old polystyrene trays for these products, and are formed by kraft paper and polyethylene. By separating the paper film from the plastic and sending it to recycling, there is significant reduction of the environmental impact and a higher recycling rate relative to the old package material (polystyrene), in addition to the paper used being FSC certified, it comes from responsible forest management areas.

Biodegradable fruit and vegetable packaging – We are the first retail company to announce a 100% replacement of polystyrene trays used for fruits and vegetables by a biodegradable solution until May 2020. The new package, found in some products of Exclusive Brands Taeq and Qualitá, is made of cellulose and starch, 100% free of petrochemical products and toxic additives and is completely degraded within six months.

New Again Program –  The program puts back into the production cycle materials that were disposed by customers in the Pão de Açúcar Unilever Recycling Stations in our stores. They are donated to cooperatives that separate them and sell them to a GPA partner plant. This supplier uses the material to make new packages for the Qualitá and Taeq products, Exclusive Brands of the Company.

Reuse #ToBeHappy – The Program provides an incentive for consumers of Pão de Açúcar stores to reduce the use of packages disposed after the first use by selling bulk products in proprietary Pão de Açúcar packages that can be either reused or packages customers can bring from their own homes.

Correct waste disposal programs for our customers

Disposal of batteries – The project, developed in conjunction with the Brazilian Electric and Electronic Industry Association (Abinee), makes battery collectors available to consumers in all Pão de Açúcar, Extra and Compre Bem stores.

Light bulb disposal – Collectors of Reciclus, a GPA-partner company, are located in 79 stores.

Coffee pods disposal – Collectors for recycling coffee pods, in a partnership with Nestlé Dolce Gusto, are present in 49 Pão de Açúcar stores.

Medication disposal – Launched in a partnership with Laboratórios Eurofarma, the initiative targets consumer awareness as to the importance of correctly disposing of expired or unused drugs, in addition to sharp and cutting materials, such as needles and vials. The materials can be disposed in all Extra e Pão de Açúcar drugstores in the City of São Paulo.

Disposal of electronics – In Extra Hiper stores in the City of São Paulo and São Bernardo do Campo, we made electronics collectors available to customers for disposing of computers, mobile phones, printers, among others.
